Just after 1830 last evening, the Ledyard Fire Com Just after 1830 last evening, the Ledyard Fire Company, Gales Ferry Fire Company and American Ambulance were dispatched to the area of Colonel Ledyard Hwy and Thomas Rd for a one car MVA. Upon arrival, units found the vehicle on its side and the patient trapped. Crews quickly removed the roof of the vehicle to gain access to the patient. American Ambulance transported the patient to the hospital with non life threatening injuries.

As units were about to clear, we were then dispatched to the 200 block of Avery Hill Rd for a reported grill fire on a deck near the house. Upon arrival, crews found an active grill fire, being fed by the propane tank. The home owner was able to keep the fire under control with a garden hose and help prevent the fire from spreading. Crews extinguished the fire and drained the propane tank due to the valve failing. There was minimal damage to the property. This is a very good reminder to not use grills close to a structure or on the deck, in case something were to go wrong.

It has been a busy weekend for our volunteers. Sin It has been a busy weekend for our volunteers. Since Friday, we have responded to 3 separate brush fires within our town. Luckily, all fires were less than an acre in size and we were able to contain them before they could spread and cause more damage. We have already responded to a higher than average amount of brush fires this year. We want to say thank you to all of our mutual aid departments for assisting in all these incidents.

The fire danger has been high and could continue to stay elevated. Please use caution when burning, discarding ashes and cigarettes. Always remember to extinguish fires completely and do not leave them unattended. Open burning is never allowed during elevated fire danger conditions and a permit must be obtained before any open burning can be done.

At 0530 we were dispatched to the Pequot Tower to assist Mashantucket Fire Department with a working fire on the 18th floor. After being released from the scene, we were requested to cover their station. While performing coverage, we responded to an alarm at the Hard Rock Cafe. Upon returning to our station, members attended our annual live burn training at the Eastern CT Fire School. Members trained on fire attack operations for basement fires and search evolutions. Live burn trainings safely allow members to train in the elements of an actual fire to enhance their skills and be more prepared in case we need to respond to any structure fire. #volunteer #firefighting #livefiretraining #ledyardfire #ledyardct #mutualaidresponse

Ledyard and Gales Ferry Fire companies were dispat Ledyard and Gales Ferry Fire companies were dispatched to the area of the reservoir for a possible brush fire after multiple calls for smoke in the area. Units arrived on scene and began making entry into the reservoir property. Crews found a large active fire between Long Cove Road and the reservoir. Engine R-12 was able to establish a draft sight from an access road to the reservoir which prevented companies having to lay long supply lines and having to use tankers. Companies operated on scene for roughly 4 and a half hours before turning it over to the CT DEEP forestry devision. At the time, DEEP reported about 6-7 acres being affected.

Thanks to all the surrounding departments and agencies for their assistance in this incident and those who were stationed at our building in case another emergency came in.
Some Ledyardites may have seen Ledyard Fire Compan Some Ledyardites may have seen Ledyard Fire Company personnel out on Sandy Hollow Road this past Thursday doing some pump training. Using the apparatus known as R-12 and R-13, the fire company was getting some practice on "Drafting operations" which is the action of using a nearby water source to fill the truck and use that water for fire attack operations or to fill other fire trucks when a hydrant is not near by or is non functioning. In drafting, a rigid hose is used to suck up water into the truck's pump like a large siphon and creates a vacuum, forming a consistent flow of water up the hose and into the truck, creating a useful water supply that should last as long as the body of water being used will supply. Stay safe!
