A Ledyard man suffered a serious head injury when a car and moped collided on Route 117 on Thursday, state police said.
Jeremy J. Traxier, 24, of 3 Hickory Drive, Ledyard, was transported by Life Star to Hartford Hospital, police said. His condition was not immediately available.
The accident happened about noon on Route 117 at the intersection of Village Drive in Ledyard.
According to a state police news release, Sean T. Peavey, 25, of 10 Cathcart Drive, Griswold, was driving a 2011 Ford Taurus south on Route 117 at the same time Traxier was driving a 1978 Puch Maxi-Luxe, also south.
The two vehicles crossed paths at the intersection of Village Drive. Peavey was not injured, police said. Ledyard Fire Chief John R. Doucette said in an earlier release that at 11:59 a.m. responders found a 24-year-old male lying in the travel portion of the roadway with serious injuries.
Because of the nature and extent of the injuries, he stated, a Life Star helicopter was called to the scene. The Gales Ferry Fire Company established a landing zone at the nearby Ledyard Center School.
After being taken by Ledyard Ambulance to the landing zone, the injured man was flown to Hartford Hospital, according to the release. American Ambulance paramedics also assisted.
Ledyard police are investigating.
Route 117 at Village Drive was closed after the accident and reopened to traffic about 3:30 p.m.
