Ledyard -- At 0140 hours the Ledyard Fire Company was dispatched to Rose Hill Road at Route 117 Ledyard, CT for the report of a single vehicle accident with a car into the woods.

Upon arrival units found a vehicle approximately 75 feet off the shoulder of the roadway, down a 30 foot incline, resting in thick woods and muddy swamp.  All three occupants were still inside the vehicle.  Two of the three occupants were seriously injured and pinned in the vehicle.  A metal beam guard rail and steep terrain made for access to the vehicle difficult.

The driver of the Mitsubushi Lancer exited the vehicle on her own and refused medical treatment.  The front seat and rear seat passenger required extensive extrication for removal from the vehicle.  Both passengers were transported to Backus Hospital in Norwich, CT.   Backus Hospital ER was notifed of a Trauma Alert called by the American Ambulance Paramedic on scene, indicated serious injuries.

The Ledyard Police Department, Ledyard Fire Department, Ledyard Volunteer Emergency Squad and an American Ambulance Paramedic initially responded to the call.  Upon arrving on scene, command requested Gales Ferry Fire Department for manpower assistance due to the location of the vehicle in the woods.

Ledyard respond with the rescue and the ems/command vehicle pulling the ATV's to a command post on East Dr in Gales Ferry. Personal were deployed in teams to fan out in the woods and search for a 13 year old girl who had got lost in the woods. At the begining of the search she was on the phone with the dispatch center, as the search progressed here cell phone battery died and she was unable to communicate anymore. 3 teams of fire dept searchers along with LPD personal searched for over an hour in heavy underbrush and swamp before safely locating the victim. Crews safely removed her from the woods and she was released doing well to her parents.  Personal operated in terrain that was so tough to navigate on foot the ATV's couldnt even safely be used.

Please remember to be familiar in the area you are hiking/walking in and make sure you cell phone is fully charged. It doesnt take much to be disoriented in the woods and your cell phone could be lifeline to safety.

Ledyard — A local business at 14 Lorenz Parkway was damaged by a fire early this morning.
Ledyard Fire Deputy Chief John Doucette said the fire at Forte Rts, which makes carbon fiber tubing, was reported at 3:54 a.m.
Doucette said a delivery person, who had access to the business, opened the door and saw that the steel, warehouse-style building was filled with smoke.
No employees were in the building at the time, Doucette said.
When firefighters arrived, they discovered smoke throughout the building and fire in the manufacturing area. The fire was contained to that portion of the business, he said.
Doucette said the fire had mostly extinguished itself because it lacked oxygen to spread. The fire was under control within 45 minutes.
He said while the business is salvageable, it would have to be closed for a couple days for clean up and repairs.
In addition to Ledyard, Gales Ferry, an Old Mystic FAST team, Center Groton, Mashantucket, Preston, Poquetanuck fire departments also responded. A Groton ambulance was called in as well.
No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.

  • The Ledyard Fire Department received two new four-wheel all-terrain vehicles today. The new equipment was purchased out of the company’s fund-raising account. Chief Steve Daggett said they pushed for delivery to be made ahead of the hurricane. The ATVs can be used to access areas that may otherwise be cut off by fallen trees. They carry chain saws, medical equipment, and one of the vehicles can be used to transport patients.
  • Daggett said the town's fire companies have been working overtime throughout the week to ensure equipment readiness. "We're taking this threat very seriously," he said.
